Women’s hockey drop two straight to Ooks, men split games with Vikings
Women
The Trojans women’s hockey team played back-to-back games against provincial rival NAIT Ooks over the weekend.
The teams first met Friday, Jan. 30, in Edmonton.
Late in the first period, Caitlyn Tong scored a power-play goal to put the Ooks up 1-0.
In the second period, the Ooks added another goal from Brielle Banton to double their lead.
Veteran Sydney Hollman scored for the Trojans on the power play to make it 2-1.
The Ooks added an empty-net goal from Madison McCullough to clinch a 3-1 win.
The following day, the two teams met at WinSport Arena in Calgary.
Kaylee Williams and Lindsey Goncalves both scored in the first period to give the home side a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Ooks scored two goals in two minutes to tie the game.
After an Alia Drummond body-checking penalty sent the Ooks to the power play midway through the third period, Allison McGregor scored the go-ahead goal to make it 3-2.
The Ooks held on for their second straight win over the Trojans.
With the two narrow losses to the Ooks, the Trojans sit fifth in the ACAC women’s hockey South standings with a 6-15 record.
Next up, the Trojans face the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Friday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Medicine Hat, followed by a rematch Saturday at 7:15 p.m. at WinSport Arena.
Men
Coming off two strong wins against the Concordia Thunder, the Trojans men’s hockey team looked to continue its momentum.
The Trojans played the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings on Saturday, Jan. 31, in Camrose, Alta.
In the first period, the Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Lynden Hanvold, Dylan Clark and a power-play marker from Travis Hensrud.
The Vikings scored the lone goal of the second period to make it 3-1.
Two minutes into the third, Jayven Leslie scored to cut the lead to 3-2.
Shortly after, Hanvold and Clark both netted power-play goals in just over a minute to extend the lead to 5-2.
Copper Algajer and Colby Bear added goals later in the period to give the Trojans a 7-2 advantage.
A late goal from Vikings forward Zak Anderson made the final score 7-3.
The two teams rematched Sunday in Camrose.
Bear opened the scoring in the second period to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Later in the period, Alex Lucas tied the game for the Vikings.
The third period featured three goals, starting with one from Trojans veteran Zach Cain.
Leslie and Nico Gallo both scored halfway through the period to give the Vikings a 3-2 win.
With a win and a loss against the Vikings, the Trojans remain second in the ACAC men’s hockey South standings with a 14-4 record.
Next, the Trojans host Briercrest College for back-to-back games Friday, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 2:15 p.m. at WinSport Arena.
Trojans futsal compete in first ACAC tournament
From Saturday, Jan. 31, to Sunday, Feb. 1, the Trojans men’s and women’s futsal teams competed in the first ACAC tournament of the season.
Hosted by Medicine Hat College, both teams played three games over the weekend.
Women
Coming off a 5-0 win against the Olds College Broncos on Saturday, Jan. 24, the Trojans opened the tournament against the Ambrose University Lions.
The Trojans cruised to a 12-1 win Saturday afternoon, with seven different scorers.
The highlight was fifth-year Trojan Nikki Charlton, who scored four goals and earned player of the match honours.
Saturday evening saw the Trojans face the host Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
In front of a packed Rattlers gym, the teams played to a 1-1 draw, with Isabel Vega scoring for the Trojans and Nicoly Souza for the Rattlers.
The Trojans wrapped up the weekend Sunday afternoon against the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks.
A 3-1 win capped off the tournament, with Vega scoring her third goal in three games and Sofia Sproule netting a brace.
With two wins and a draw, the Trojans sit second in the ACAC women’s futsal South standings with a 3-0-1 record.
Next, the Trojans face the Broncos on the road Saturday, Feb. 14, at noon in Olds.
Men
The Trojans men’s futsal team looked to carry momentum following a 10-1 win over the Broncos on Saturday, Jan. 24.
The Trojans faced the Lions on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 2-1 at halftime, the Trojans rallied for a 5-3 win, with goals from Ty Ritchie, Leslie Travaloki, Alec Wells and two from Dale Reas-Do.
Wells was named player of the match after recording a goal and an assist in the second half.
Saturday night saw the Trojans fall 6-1 to the host Rattlers.
Miguel Mendoza scored the lone goal for the Trojans.
The Trojans closed out the weekend Sunday against the Kodiaks.
Mendoza scored twice early to put the Trojans up 2-0 in the first half.
The Kodiaks pulled one back before halftime.
Wells added his second goal of the weekend to make it 3-1.
The Kodiaks tied the game late.
After midfielder Ben Odd was sent off following a second yellow card, the Kodiaks scored the winner to claim a 4-3 victory.
With one win and two losses, the Trojans are tied for second in the ACAC men’s futsal South standings with a 2-2 record.
Next up is a road match against the Broncos on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 1:15 p.m. in Olds.
Trojans collect major awards at ACAC curling championships
From Friday, Jan. 30, to Sunday, Feb. 1, Portage College hosted the 2025-26 ACAC curling championships at the Lac La Biche Curling Club in Lac La Biche, Alta.
The night before competition began, Trojans athletes were honoured at the 2025-26 ACAC curling awards ceremony.
Trojans skip Bayly Scoffin was named all-conference on the women’s side, while skip Samantha Atkinson and second Bronte Chin earned all-conference honours in mixed curling.
Women
The Trojans went 4-0 in round-robin play, defeating the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder 5-1, the Lakeland College Rustlers 8-2, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings 5-4 and the host Portage College Voyageurs 8-2.
In the knockout stage, the Trojans fell 11-4 to the Thunder, sending them to the bronze medal match.
The Trojans responded with an 8-0 win over the Voyageurs to claim bronze.
Men
On the men’s side, the Trojans opened with an 8-4 loss to the NAIT Ooks and a 5-4 loss to the Kings.
The Trojans rebounded with a win over the Thunder.
In the knockout stage, the Trojans defeated the Kings 5-4 to advance to the final against the Ooks.
The Ooks won 8-3, earning the Trojans a silver medal.
Mixed
The Trojans mixed team finished round-robin play with a 2-1 record, falling 5-1 to the Ooks defeating the Rustlers 7-5 and the Thunder 11-3.
The Trojans beat the Rustlers 9-5 in the semifinals and defeated the Ooks 10-2 in the final to win the gold medal.
